The SIA Heritage Series 5 is the last and final sets of the series of replica commercial airplane models that feature in SIA past and current fleet. A MUST have for all Commercial Airline model collectors.
Boeing 747-200 - The World's First Jumbo Jet
The Boeing 747 was originated from the US Air Force's CX-HLS project for an ultra-large, long-range military transport in the 1960s. The increasingly crowded skies and the availability of higher-thrust engines has resulted in the development of the Boeing 747 with the first entered service in 1971.
Following the split of Malaysia-Singapore Airlines, the new national carrier was named Singapore Airlines (SIA). Three months prior to its official launched, SIA made a bold decision to purchase two B747-200 in October 1972.
The first two Boeing 747-200s enter its service with SIA on 1 October 1973. It helped SIA to increase its capacity to long-haul destination in Europe, Australia and the Orient. On 10 May 1978, SIA signed a world's record order valued at US$900 million for 13 B747-200s and 6 B727-200s. This marked the beginning of SIA's fleet modernization programme by disposing its existing fleet of relatively new seven B747-200s.
Boeing 757-200 - The Versatile Jetliner
To maintain its position as one of the top airline in the world, SIA's continual emphasis on technological advancement can be observed through the Boeing 757, a single aisle, twin engine jetliner with exceptional fuel efficiency, low noise levels and increased passenger comfort.
SIA ordered four B757-200s in May 1983 as part of its fleet modernization to replace the existing Airbus A300-B4. The first B757-200 joined SIA's fleet in November 1984. By January 1985, four complementary B757-200s were in operation to high frequency regional destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Kuantan, Jakarta and Medan.
Airbus A340-300E - A New Star in the Sky
The A340 started commercial operations in January 1993, becoming the first all-new, long-haul four-engined aircraft to enter service in more than 20 years after the Boeing 747s.
In June 1994, SIA ordered 10 A340-300Es, with 20 on option worth US$5.4 billion. Equipped with more powerful CFM56-5C4 engines, the extended range A340-300E enabled SIA to maintain its competitive edge by introducing more non-stop, long-haul service to Paris in October 1986 followed by other non-stop service from Singapore to Copenhagen, Rome and Athens.
Dubbed by SIA as 'CELESTAR', it was configured with 12 First Class, 30 Raffles Class and 225 Economy Class.
Boeing 777-300 - Going Global
SIA took delivery of its first B777-300 in December 1998. SIA currently operates 59 Boeing 777s, making it the world's largest operator of the Boeing 777 family of aircraft. In July 2004, SIA rolled out a B777-300 painted in the Star Alliance livery. The 73.9m long plane registered 9V-SYE showed its original SIA tail, slightly smaller billboard "Star Alliance" title and logo on the fuselage and the Airline's title just behind the cockpit. SIA joined the Star Alliance in April 2000 as part of its globalization strategy.
