Niki was established on 28 November 2003 by Niki Lauda, twice Formula One motor racing world champion for Ferrari and founder of Lauda Air. Its a leisure airline connecting cities in northern Europe to numerous resort areas around the Mediterranean, flown mostly on behalf of tour operator Neckermann Reisen. The airline is partially owned by German low-fare airline Air Berlin, with which Niki has close cooperation. The first flight on 16 February 2004 using an Airbus A320 from Vienna to Düsseldorf was personally piloted by Niki Lauda.
