The Nostalgia Douglas DC-4
This plane was developed as a military plane during World War II. After the war ended, as many as 1162 aircrafts became available to worldwide airline operators. AN additional 78 aircraft was built by Douglas to fill new orders. You'll be a proud owner of its perfect replica as few survive today.
Malaysan Airways leased a DC-4 to inaugurate its first long distance flight between Singapore and Hong Kong in 1958. It was place to service the Singapore to Jakarta route later. The DC-4 plane has a seating capacity of 44 passengers.
Significant Beginnings for Boeing 737-100
A milestone in the history of Malayan Airways was made on May 14, 1966 when the government of Malaysia and Singapore signed an agreement to have joint-majority share interest in the company. The Airline was re-brand Malaysia-Singapore Airlines (MSA) on December 30, 1966.
Five new Boeing 737-100s was order for the new airline's future plan. The delivery of this new aircraft was between July and November 1969. MSA was the first airline in Asia to operate the Boeing 737-100 on its shorter regional routes.
Airbus A300-B4 hails a new era
Eight Airbus A300-B4 valued at US$310 million was ordered by SIA in 1979 from Airbus Industrie, the European aircraft consortium. It has seating capacity of 24 in First Class and 222 of Economy Class, this new aircraft was part of SIA's plan to phase out the Boeing 707s and Boeing 737s aircraft.
A rousing welcome was given to this aircraft on January 1981 when it arrived from Toulouse. Dubbed as 'A300 Superbus' was deployed on the Singapore-Jakarta and Singapore-Kuala Lumpur routes on February 2, 1981 and was subsequently deployed on short and medium-haul flights to Bangkok, Bandar Seri Begawan, Manila, Hong Kong, Colombo and Madras.
Boeing 747-400 - Queen of the Skies
Singapore Airlines announced a world-record US$3.3 billion order for 20 Boeing 747-400 in 1986. A second order for another 30 more planes was made in 1990. The Boeing 747-400 was to phase out the Boeing 747-200 and -300s planes.
Dubbed as 'MEGATOP' by Singapore Airlines, this new generation plane can fly non-stop from Singapore-London route and its also set a aviation standards for other airlines.
On October 12, 1993, SIA took delivery of its 21st MEGATOP 747 (registered as 9V-SMU) which is also the 1000th Boeing 747 rolled out from the Boeing plant in Seattle. This aircraft was configure to accommodate 12 First Class, 50 Business Class and 313 Economy Class passengers.
