Fokker F27 Friendship - The Popular Friend
Five Dutch-built turboprop Fokker F27-200 Friendship aircraft replaced all Viscount services and most of the DC-3 services with Peninsular Malaya and to Kuching in Sarawak in 1963.
In 1968, an order for nine F27-500 series was placed. The -500 series has seating capacity of 48 passengers instead of 44 on the -200 series, by 30 September 1972, Malaysia-Singapore Airlines operated a total of eleven F27-500 aircrafts.
Boeing 727-200 - The Hightail
This sleek tri-jet Boeing 727-200 has three engines arranged at the rear of its fuselage. Its 32-degree swept wings combined with its unique high T-tail, provide an exceptional low-speed and short-field performance.
It had a self-contained auxiliary power unit (APU) that allowed it to operate at small airports. It was relatively new to Southeast Asia when SIA took delivery of this brand new plane. This 140-seater plane which seats 14 First Class and 126 in Economy Class arrived at the old Paya Lebar Airport on 15 September 1977.
THe Boeing 727 was deployed on the Singapore-Manila route on 1 October 1977 and subsequently operate on the Singapore-Jakarta and Singapore-Bangkok-Hong Kong routes on 1 November 1977.
Airbus A310-200 - The Technology Savvy
In May 1983, SIA embarked on its aircraft modernisation programme by placing a US$420 million order of six Airbus A310-200.
The Airbus A310-200 has the same 222-inch fuselage cross-section as the A300 which pioneered the twin-aisle wide body configuration.
This aircraft incorporated the most advanced technology available. The high aspect ratio and advanced wing design permitted lower drag airflows, thus saving fuel cost for the airline and the digital cockpit instruments were designed by pilots, for pilots.
Airbus A340-500 - Leadership in the Sky
On 2 February 2004, Singapore Airlines created history by flying non-stop for 16hours from Singapore to Los Angeles with this brand new aircraft dubbed the 'Leadership'. The A340-500 were powered by four Rolls-Royce Trents 553 engines.
SIA also set new standards with this A345Leadership with its luxurious two-class cabin layout of 64 Raffles Class and 117 on its new Executive Economy Class which has a generous pitch of 37 inches seat equip with an adjustable headrest and footrest.
